Searching Your Family History for Names Changes When Entering The U.S.

As we start the research into our genealogy, name changes is one thing we encounter. The why and how of family surname changes is not that big of a mystery. Ellis Island inspectors did not automatically change names of immigrants. Some immigrants upon arriving in the United States did change their names. Sometimes, name changes occurred at the time of naturalization. Some cultures did not have surnames they way we think of them today. Often one in their country of origin was simple referred to as Peter the Blacksmith. Thus, upon arriving, this person was given the option to be called either Black or Smith.

The Germans were one group that names were Americanized. The reason may have been to fit in, to pronounce more easily or the name was changed to the English equivalent. An example of such is Zimmermann means carpenter, thus the change to Carpenter. The change was most often based on phonetics and spelled in English the way it sounded such as Schafer was changed to Shaffer.

Name changes also occurred after immigrants had settle into different parts of the country. As new friends were made and speaking English became easier, natural changes occurred to the way names were written down. Other ways name changes occurred was as the children attended school. As the places they settled became bigger and the children attended schools, the teachers were responsible for some name changes. These were based again on spelling names the way it sounded to the English ear. Many changes were not done in any disrespect and were simply a matter of getting things recorded.

The Dos and Don'ts in Genealogy

Something many people are starting to get into these days is researching family trees. Many people are becoming more interested in their genealogy, and one reason is that it has become a much easier task to research. With the Internet, you can trace your family tree for many generations back, as well as start your family tree. When researching your genealogy, there are some things to consider. So, what are some dos and don'ts?

Researching your genealogy has a lot of benefits. It can give you a sense of self worth, as well as provide vital information about your history, such as medical information that could be very beneficial to know. It is usually best to start your research directly with family members. You can contact grandparents, aunts and uncles. They may have a lot of information to pass on that you didn't know about. Sometimes a family Bible can have lineage kept safely written inside. One thing you do not want to do is have false hopes. Be realistic when examining your family lineage.

You will, however, want to keep accurate, organized records. Find one place to document your findings and always write your discoveries in the same place. This will eliminate confusion and mistakes. Don't use more than one spelling of the surname. Using more than one spelling will confuse other relatives and make it difficult for them to trace the family. Find a reputable company to build your family tree with. Research several of them and find the one you think will be the most helpful and accurate.

Researching your family tree can be a lot of fun. It is a great way to bring family together, hear stories of the past, and get to know who and where you came from. Do start by asking your family questions. Don't wind up paying hefty fees on bogus websites to help you in your search.

Ways to Search for Genealogy in Europe

For many people, understanding where you come from is very important. For people in the United States, many times that search will find its way across to some sections of Europe. Searching for your genealogy (family tree) is really not that difficult if you are willing to put in the time and in some cases, the money.

European genealogical societies, registries and directories are very wide spread. If you research online and follow some of these registries, you have a very good chance of gaining some information about your family. Of course the more you know and the more you can narrow your times and places, the easier it will be for you to find information. If you know the name of the town that the family is from, you can go right to the town and get information from their registries of birth, death and weddings as well as other information. There are registries and informational websites for just about every country in Europe. Old newspapers are also a great source for information if you have a working understanding regarding where your ancestors might be from. There are also much more expensive ways to follow your genealogy. DNA registries and paid genealogist will do the work for you if you do not have the time to do it yourself.

Half the fun of following your family tree is the digging you do and what you find out about where you are from and who your relatives are. The advent of the Internet has made it considerably easier to find out all that information quicker than ever before.

Tips For Creating a Family Tree

Creating a family tree can be great fun. It can teach you a lot about your family, where you come from and it can answer questions about your history and roots. It can be made as simple or as complex as you want it to be. How complex it is, is totally up to you. The good news is that you always know the starting point. The starting point of any family tree is you.

You can design your family tree on paper or online. Paper is more personal, but perhaps not as organized. Online is convenient, but a bit cold. It depends on why you are doing it and what you are comfortable with. Any family tree takes a lot of digging. Start the branches with who you know such as your parents and siblings, and perhaps your grandparent and aunt/uncles. Add birth dates, deceased dates and wedding dates. Also add any other date of significance such as relocation to other countries and such. After you have the information you know yourself, it is time to dig. You can start by interviewing those relatives that are older to ask them to add to the history. You can also look in registries for births and deaths. You have the option of digging in newspapers and other available historical resources. The key is to research. As you get more information, add it to the tree and then dig lower into the family tree.

Family trees are great to have for anyone. It is a good historical reference that you can pass down to your children or other family members to keep the tree going. Children often have to do research projects like this in school. Get involved and help them out. Even you will probably be learning some valuable knowledge.
